Day 7 - Course Playing (Luke, Wyatt)

Image
Today was a fantastic day full of fun and challenging golf! To start, we split the group up into two groups and headed to separate courses. One group went to Wildcat Golf Course and played on the Lakes course. Let’s just say many balls were lost in the water. This course was especially hilly, requiring quite the trek. The other group went to Quail Valley and played on the beautiful El Dorado course. I think it would be safe to say that many of us are not the best of golfers, and the strong winds did not help. With balls flying left and right, we had to adapt to the course and think of strategies to finish with a good score.       One thing that was unique with this day was that we were sharing the course with other paying customers. This meant we had to play relatively fast and keep moving at all times. It was a much faster experience than what we played at First Tee before. This was a challenge as most paying customers were very skilled at the game and moved through the course wi

Day 6: An (almost) Full 9 Holes, Putting and Chipping Practice (Eleanor and Jordan)

This was an awesome day of golf! In the morning we discussed the history of Presidents and golfing. It was interesting to discuss how influential golf has been for presidents, as well as how much personality was reflected when a president was playing. After that we had an hour of work to focus on our research of the course history in Houston. We called our different course and asked questions about the course overall, and it was a really interesting learning experience to talk with the Head Pros of the courses.  Upon arriving at the first tee of Houston we were given a chipping and putting lesson by head pro, Coach Brian. Many of us were inexperienced with chipping, and it was interesting to see how similar it was to putting. We were put into groups of three and given three chances to get our shot within a two foot circle around the hole. We had to try and get the ball within the designated area around the hole, and at the end we tried to get at least 15 balls within the area- we did i

Day 5! Post Oak Hits the Links (Andreas and Andy)

Day 5! Post Oak Hits the Links (Andreas and Andy)   Students began the day by finishing the book, Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons and had a short discussion about what they learned. This book covered the five main areas of the swing including the grip, stance/posture, backswing, downswing and the finish. This book provided the students with a strong foundation for the execution of their swing. Next, students began working on a Google Slide presentation based on comparing their swing to the swing of a professional golfer. This began with students taking a slow-motion video of their swing and comparing it to the swing of a professional golfer.  After the short work period, students engaged in a conversation regarding golf and gender. They read an article discussing stories about Portuguese women and their experience with golf. They discussed the history of gender in golf and the current actions being taken to help women engage further in the golf world.  After the discussion, students loaded on

Day 4: Top Golf! By Sarah P and Sarah L

Our day today we have been looking forward to all week. Top golf! Immediately upon arriving at school, after opening my car door, I was greeted with the perfect chilly weather. I entered the building, had my temperature taken, and began watching the videos Mr. Roddy was showing us famous golfers, and their caddies. (caddies are the people who carry their golf bags for them). It was super interesting to me, as I thought they carried their bags themselves (how silly of me). After 3 videos, we began to read and highlight our book, or should I say golf bible, “Ben Hogans 5 Lessons”. As exciting as I find literature, I actually found this book to be really helpful, and has already improved my swing after 3 chapters. Finally, it hit 11, and we could get our clubs and load the bus. I was so excited. After a 20-ish minute bus rice, the big TOP GOLF letters were finally visible. We walked up the stairs and were pointed to the second floor where we would be teeing off from. At first, we were w

Day 3: Second Day on the Course - By Everest and Gabe

Today was a very exciting day, as we not only refined our skills further at the practice range, but we were also given the opportunity to display our newly-acquired skills on the course itself. We started the day off by reading the second chapter (stance and posture) of the Five Lessons of Golf and discussed some of the concepts introduced in the book with partners, culminating with a whole group discussion. Mr. Roddy gave us a recap of the chapter by demonstrating some of those concepts himself, and the impact (positive or negative) that they could have on our swing as a whole. Then, we grabbed our clubs and drove to FM Law Park, the same practice park that we went to yesterday. Upon our arrival, we split into three groups; the first one practiced putting, the second group practiced chipping (after a lesson), and the third group practiced hitting at the driving range, focusing on their stance, which was the focal point of our reading today, and their grip, which was the focal poin

Day 2: The First Day On The Course - By Sierra & Clark

This Wednesday marks the second day of the POS Golf J-Term! We started out the day at the museum district campus, reviewing how to grip a golf club, before heading out to F.M. Law Park where we could practice golf for the first time this week.           We had learned about gripping a golf club on day one of the J-Term, but since gripping is a fundamental skill that is critical to a good golf swing, we have to revisit it until it becomes natural. Mr. Roddy started us off by recapping what a good grip is supposed to look and feel like through a few demonstrations. The rest of us followed along and Mr. Roddy gave all of us helpful feedback on our grips. We then watched an informative video about three common grip mistakes and how to fix them. Following the video, we partnered up and practiced our grip again, this time getting feedback from our partner.           Soon after, we headed out to F.M. Law Park Golf Course, home to a nine hole course, a driving range, a putting green,

Day 1: Learning the Basics of Golf - By Asher and Ashwin

Asher and Ashwin Mr. Roddy and Mr. Jacobs J-Term 6 January 2021 Learning the Basics of Golf      We didn’t play any golf today, however, today is the only day we won’t be going to a golf course. Instead, we learned a lot of things about golf and started the day off by reading a chapter from The Dogged Victims of Inexorable Fate, a book written by Dan Jenkins who was an American author and golfer from Fort Worth, Texas. The chapter we read was called “You’ll Not Do That Here Laddie,” and it goes through some of the histories of golf. As it is described in the chapter, golf is thought to have been invented by the Romans who called it paganica, or possibly by the Dutch who called it kolven. Nowadays, however, golf is known as a Scottish game. In fact, the rules of golf that most are familiar with today were created by a small group in Scotland named The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. Mr. Roddy briefly went over these rules to familiarize everyone with the game. You will find th
